Known at one time as the Paris of the East, Bucharest is Romania’s largest city and its capital. It is a city full of busy streets, amazing architecture and one too many apartment blocks. Today, Bucharest is one of Eastern Europe’s most thriving cities.
In the southeast of the country, it is situated on Dambovita River. Around 2.6 million people live here, and the city covers an area of approximately 88 square miles.
Officially, Bucharest is divided by 6 numbered districts; however, people tend to refer to places by using the name of the neighbourhood in question instead.
Downtown Bucharest is home to many different places of interest including galleries, museums and much more. In Piata Revolutiei, you’ll find the Royal Palace, which today houses the National Art Museum. This area is also good spot to go if you’re looking to sample some of the local cuisine or nightlife.
Another notable place in the downtown area in Piata Universitatii. The National Theatre is located here. Lipscani, a pedestrianised area, is the main street in the city’s historic district.
In the north of the city, where the main train station is located, you’ll also find some of Bucharest’s most notable tree-lined boulevards. To the south of the city centre, you’ll find the Unirii Boulevard, which was conceived by Ceausescu and imitates the style of Paris’ famous Champs-Elysées.
Architecturally, Bucharest is a mix of everything from medieval through art nouveau to communist and also contemporary. Visitors can easily witness the city’s stunning display of architectural delights. These include the Palace of the Parliament, the Arcul de Triumf and the Romanian Athenaeum.
